Hi! I'm seeing it now! After looking through a few newspaper archives, I have to agree with JBW that Lady Clermont doesn't meet Wikipedia's notability standards. Unfortunately, her media coverage is mostly passing mentions in articles about her husband. You could add a mention of her botany interest in his article, but an independent article isn't appropriate (We have no independent article Sasha Obama for basically the same reason — the press discusses her but only in relation to her parents). It can be discouraging to get a hang of notability standards but I hope you stick around! I am not very involved with WikiProject Women in Red but it seems to have a list of female botanists without articles. Feel free to ask me questions! New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

edit

Hello Crunchydillpickle,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

About your review of Draft:Marc 4

edit

Hey Crunchydillpickle, I don't believe your acceptance of this draft was an appropriate review. The sources provided do not demonstrate the subject's notability under any of the musical ensemble criteria, some citations actually fail verification, and there is promotional language in the prose that violates the neutral point of view policy. I'd urge you to revert your acceptance and work with the page creator in draftspace to fix these issues. Let me know if you have any questions. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 17:54, 21 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sure, will draftify. I agree the notability is iffy — I was too optimistic that Italian languages sources would come. My bad. For what it's worth, I don't see major NPOV issues, just poor sourcing. Anyway, sorry. Never my intention to make bad calls. Crunchydillpickle🥒 (talk) 18:12, 21 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
No need to apologize, and I appreciate you for taking my feedback in stride! Hopefully, that can inform your process when reviewing in the future. For the record, I don't blame you for trying to accept a submission where you felt the notability was borderline (I think that's an excellent approach for an AfC reviewer) but that was simply not the case here — the closest the sourcing ever got was a couple of passing mentions. I would also not recommend making decisions on drafts based on sources that are not yet cited unless you have personally taken a look at them and determined that they demonstrate the subject's notability. I've done that before, and it's helpful to tag the article with {{Sources exist}} to inform other editors of their existence, or even leaving links in a {{Refideas}} on the talk page. Finally, some of the non-neutral writing I was referring to were these: "collaborate with all the most prestigious soundtrack authors", "became his greatest worldwide success", "dedicated themselves". I hope you can see that this is not encyclopedic language, and I'd recommend you keep an eye out for this kind of stuff in the future. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 18:26, 21 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ha, I agree those pull quotes have a problem, but I'd say the issue (particularly for the second two) is more than they're unsourced, less that they're promotional. Really all I'm getting at is that NPOV issues and sourcing issues are sometimes two sides of the same coin. Anyway, thanks for noticing. I know I shouldn't apologize — apologies don't seem play much of a role in Wikipedia culture — but I always find it hard not to apologize when I do feel viscerally sorry for the (few, hopefully) less-than-stellar decisions I make here. Saint Diablo Review

edit

Many thanks for the positive feedback on my Saint Diablo submission, Crunchydillpickle! I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know why it was rejected and how it could be improved, however I do have a question or two.

Is Eclipse Records (has a wiki page) considered an important indie label, as defined in item number 5 of WP:BAND? They have a large roster of bands over the years, many of which are independently notable such as Mushroomhead, and Saint Diablo has already released two albums through them, with a third coming out in July. Regarding them being published in newspapers/magazines, I just saw a new article from ghostcultmag about the new EP, but I did not include it because I had already been working so long on the version I submitted and planned to update it after the album was released.

Also, you probably saw this already, but just in case you did not, I cited/referenced articles written about them in The Free Lance-Star (newspaper), several online metal mag-type sites (independent of the band; not Eclipse Records or band published), and the lead singer/band was also included in a rather large, professionally published book about the culture of latin metal.

With the new album coming out, I would think they may get some additional recognition; would you recommend I keep an eye on them and resubmit or are the items I raised above sufficient? Thank you again for your help, I really appreciate it! ... and I'll be keeping an eye out for other bands that may need some help with their pages, too.

Thanks again!

Ghostcultmag link: https://ghostcultmag.com/saint-diablo-share-their-new-single-and-video-voice-on-the-phone-new-ep-coming-soon/ Metal Music Historian (talk) 22:45, 26 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Metal Music Historian! Yeah, as you noticed, the "important indie label" provision on the notability standards for bands is vague wording. Wikipedia editors have been dealing with the vagueness for years, and since it's such an iffy criterion I don't like to use it as the deciding factor. Another thing to consider is the general notability guideline which applies to all articles and comes up so much that Wikipedia editors abbreviate it to GNG. Compared to those band-specific standards, it's a lot more broad: a topic can have a standalone article if it has "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject."
First up, are Draft:Saint Diablo's references significant? The Heavy Mag piece is so short and press release-esque that I wouldn't call it "significant" coverage. I'm also not quite sure if the "Heavy Metal Music in Latin America" book's brief mentions would count as "significant," but maybe. Next, are the sources reliable? Since most of the sources (Blabbermouth, Metal Shock Finland, and Ghost Cult Mag) are pretty small and specialized, none of them are listed on Wikipedia's big list of reliable sources. They're fine to use, but I wouldn't use them to count toward notability. The closest thing to a large mainstream publication is the regional newspaper Free Lance Star which looks pretty good. Lastly, are the sources independent of the subject? The record label's website, the YouTube videos, and the Amazon album listing are not.
All in all, this leaves the draft in a pretty tough spot since the only source that unambiguously counts toward the general notability standards is the Free Lance Star. In my experience, the bands that actually get Wikipedia articles have at least four or five really good sources. I feel confident in my decision to decline, but you're totally welcome to re-submit it if you'd like a different reviewer's eyes! You're also welcome to put it on a different wiki (my cursory search turned up this one) which might have different standards. Anyway, I appreciate your efforts! Also, I listened to Saint Diablo while I typed this up because I was curious. It made me feel very intense :-) Crunchydillpickle🥒 (talk) 00:09, 27 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay, that makes sense and I really appreciate the detailed explanation @Crunchydillpickle! ... and thank you for the tips, as well. I'll keep an eye on the band and see where they go from here... and yes, their music is quite intense and I enjoy it, hence the reasoning behind taking the time to write the submission... thanks again for your help, it was very informative! : ) Metal Music Historian (talk) 00:27, 27 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay good, glad it wasn't overly thorough. Wikipedia's guidelines can be extensive, vague, and even contradictory sometimes — but it's still a fun place, I promise! Crunchydillpickle🥒 (talk) 01:15, 27 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
