Backlogged?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until someone promotes it to a preparation area. To alleviate this problem, if the approved page has more than 120 approved hooks, then sets will change twice per day (every 12 hours) instead of once per day (every 24 hours). When the backlog falls below 60 approved nominations set frequency returns to once a day.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to the nominations page, and it also isn't on this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is either in one of the prep areas, has been promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

How to promote an accepted hook

  • See Wikipedia:Did you know/Preparation areas for full instructions.
  • In one window, open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to promote.
  • In another window, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.
  • In the prep set...
    • Paste the hook into the hook area (be sure to not paste in that that)
    • Paste the credit information ({{DYKmake}} and/or {{DYKnom}}) into the credits area.
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted [[Jane Fonda]]", preview, and save
  • Back on DYK nomination page...
    • change {{DYKsubpage to {{subst:DYKsubpage
    • change |passed= to |passed=yes
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted original hook to Prep 3", preview, and save

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to the nominations page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from the nominations page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

Note: Articles intended to be held for special occasion dates should be nominated within seven days of creation, start of expansion, or promotion to Good Article status. The nomination should be made between at least one week prior to the occasion date, to allow time for reviews and promotions through the prep and queue sets, but not more than six weeks in advance. The proposed occasion must be deemed sufficiently special by reviewers. The timeline limitations, including the six week maximum, may be waived by consensus, if a request is made at WT:DYK, but requests are not always successful. April Fools' Day hooks are exempted from the timeline limit; see Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know.
Note for promoters: please be sure to add an "invisible" comment after a hook when you've placed it in prep, noting that it's a special occasion hook and including the date it is supposed to run. This should keep the hook from being moved after promotion, as sometimes happens to hooks when a queue needs a slot filled or a prep set needs to be made more balanced by swapping hooks between preps.

Thanks @Launchballer: I have added a cross-ref (it had been referenced at the end of the paragraph, but the paragraph was then split in to two). Re the IP's comments, the citation quote gives all the info about the funeral, and the rest of his book is about the myth. I guess the IP is referring to the latter question. I can bring some more quotes if helpful.
For context, all the sources in the article say essentially the same thing – there is only one known original source for this event, Josephus. The Israeli national myth version differs from that story in a number of significant ways. We can add some nuance to the words "is now known to be a myth" if that is helpful, but the underlying point is beyond doubt.

The wording that it "is now known to be a myth" is simply not supported by the source provided. Perhaps "believed by some to be a myth" or even better "described by one scholar as a myth" could be supported by the citation, but "is now known to be a myth" embellishes the source far beyond any justifiable limit. @Alansohn: regarding your comment from a few weeks ago, a new section (Masada_myth#Decline) has now been added to the article as suggested by User:Uppagus. It includes a list of the notable scholars which published on this topic between 1975 and Nachman Ben-Yehuda's book in 1996, as given by Ben-Yehuda.
I have read widely on this topic, including the most recent work by Jodi Magness, and can firmly confirm that there is no scholarly debate as to whether this specific narrative is a myth. Not a single dissenting voice. Onceinawhile (talk) 21:18, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Launchballer: it would be great to have a new reviewer look at this now. There was an initial aversion to the article by some editors - hence the AfD and subsequent talk page discussions. But these challenges have petered out as concerned editors found the time to read the underlying sourcing in detail, and it seems now to be clear to all that this is a well-covered subject with many decades of academic work underpinning it. The article has benefited from the additional scrutiny, which has made it even stronger. You have my sympathy, I had similar snorts when I brought Matty Healy here. (They even nixed my P05 article.) I'm looking at this now for the first time; it's certainly strongly worded but all its claims are backed up, so this should be fine. Thank you @Launchballer: I enjoyed reading those articles you linked to. I am genuinely amazed that an article that has had almost 5 million views since you recreated it last year had all those delete votes.
I have done some more work to the article,[3] including adding a further source which works neatly as an end-of-sentence citation for the hook (Sheldon 1998, p. 448: "The belief system he refers to is a myth created around the story of Masada and the Jewish fighters who committed suicide there at the end of the Great Jewish War against Rome in A.D. 73. The story, as Josephus tells it, is not one of heroism. The sicarii on Masada were simply an extremist group of terrorists who had never participated in the Jewish Revolt to begin with and had spent more time killing other Jews than fighting the Romans. Modern twentieth-century Zionists, however, took the original story, eliminated the more embarrassing parts (like the massacre of Jews at Ein Gedi by the sicarii), then used the remaining core to construct a "mythical narrative" of heroism, sacrifice, and national pride for modern Israelis." I see that my cutting of excessive quotations in the citations per WP:FOOTQUOTE was reverted by Nishidani who said "The main editor is high experienced in both content and wiki norms". @AirshipJungleman29: to be fair to Nishidani, his comment – one week ago – politely invited you to explain your position at the talk page.
To try to explain Nishidani's comment: Our guideline has been consistent for many years: "Brief quotations of copyrighted text may be used to illustrate a point, establish context, or attribute a point of view or idea... Extensive quotation of copyrighted text is prohibited." An ANI thread interpreting this for a WP:FA from a few years ago includes comments such as: "de minimis refers to each individual source; we never use more than a paragraph" and "We do not have extensive quotation from one source--the longest quote is 365 words long." That same ANI discussion identified why quotations in footnotes are beneficial in articles in controversial topic areas like Israeli history – it saves a lot of time because it allows both experienced and inexperienced editors to verify and contextualize our articles' key claims quickly. Understood. For the record, a conclusion was reached – the article (Balfour Declaration) was promoted to WP:FA, and subsequently featured on the main page as WP:TFA. Having surveyed this in the past, I can confirm there are a number of featured articles which contain a significant amount of academic quotations in footnotes.
If consensus here requires them to be removed, I will accept that and remove them. But personally I believe that this is the exact situation that WP:FOOTQUOTE was written for, and our articles, readers and the academics who wrote the underlying sources all benefit from it. I mean that a conclusion was reached in the parallel discussion at WP:FA and WP:TFA, as the article was subsequently promoted and then featured in the highest profile part of the main page. This is one of many such examples – in my experience consensus holds across our project more broadly, as 100% of my Good Articles and Featured Articles have detailed quotations in footnotes to aid verification on complex topics or offline sources. Looking at the actual reviews of those articles, it seems to be an issue continually brought up which you wave aside. For Mandate for Palestine, see this comment at GAN and this comment at the archived FAC; for Palestinian enclaves, see the first and second GA reviews. Seeing the quality of the editors who believe the quotes to be problematic, my view is if anything stronger than before. A better introduction will have at least two sentences summarizing the background and recording, and one sentence for the reception. The track listing is unsourced, and as per WP:RATEYOURMUSIC, a better source is needed that is not WP:DEPRECATED. The article is neutral in tone, and no plagiarism was detected. The hook is interesting to a broad audience, properly mentioned and cited in the article, and verified by the source in Spanish. The album cover image has an appropriate non-free license. My reading of WP:PLOTSOURCE is that it does not in fact apply to track listings and personnel. For one thing, it's explicitly talking about plot sections, and I really don't think either count as plot or even match the spirit of the guideline. Although one can assume good faith that the track listings and personnel are cited to the CD itself, it's always safe to make that clear especially to those who many not access to it. Although it is correct that PLOTSOURCE does not apply here, the basic premise behind it is similar. The content is readily available in the work itself, it is provided here in a way that does not involve any interpretation of it on our part, and it does not make the most of the article or its claim to notability. It is a primary source, but an acceptable use of it as pointed. Yes, not everybody may have access to the source, and that goes for all sources in all articles, see Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Cost. It's not needed to cite other sources for this, especially as those sources would be merely repeating verbatim the content of the primary source just as we are doing right now. I think that there have been quite a few “protesters protesting” DYKs that have been done in the past, when i do a quick search. I suppose the interesting part is subject to the reviewer tho. (1), (2), (3). I still think ALT1 should also be fine to do if ALT0 isn’t fine. And in general, presenting both sides of it, as either a stupidly hypocritical move, or as a call against pinkwashing, would be the NPOV way of presenting this article on a DYK; removing either side would be POV. I've given this some more thought. The other problem with ALT1 is that you have to know what pinkwashing is, and I didn't before. Also, WP:DYKINT's tightened up considerably since 2022, never mind 2004, and other stuff exists isn't a good argument anyway. The article says that he continued to work with the specialist for weeks, which seems to contradict the hook? Looking around online for sources about quickly curing a stammer, I found "There is no instant cure for stuttering., contrary to popular belief, there isn't a permanent fix to overcoming a stammer, and therapies and courses are not a cure or a 'quick fix' for stammering. Maybe you can think of a better phrasing for a hook (or we could come up with an alternate hook not having to do with the stammer). The claim from the news article is that Kerr recorded Lee saying the date and time when he first arrived, stammering, and then 18 minutes later took another recording of him saying the date and time, not stammering – i.e. just saying one simple sentence, not an ability to fluently speak without stammering. (The news article author presumably listened to this recording.) Then he stayed for another few weeks with Kerr to work on it, and by the time he left he considered himself cured with only a slight occasional stammer remaining. I don't think the claimed "cure" here was ever perfect, but Kerr really did have a stammering clinic in Jersey for decades, apparently with significant success, with people coming from all over the world to work with him. After 1955 Kerr's clinic was hosted in this funny boat-shaped building in Jersey called "Barge Aground", which can nowadays be rented by tourists.     Building is complicated. Only part of the structure made it to the UK. The inner stonework did not and while it is freestanding it would have originally been inside a larger temple. You've also got the argument that Cleopatra's Needle, London is a building. The rivalry will probably be understood by US readers, but those outside the US may not be as familiar with the Gators-Seminoles rivalry. Thank you @Ergo Sum: Regarding the image, it is used in the Moumni 2020 Brill-Muqarnas article in the bibliography. They say "Fig. 3. Anonymous, Mustafa Khaznadar and His Son Muham-mad, circa 1855. Oil on canvas, 82 × 131 cm. Tunis Institut National du Patrimoine, collection Qsar es-Saïd, inv. no. 46-07-28-83." If the unknown artist was 30 when painting it, that would mean they were born 200 years ago, and thus are statistically likely to have died more than 100 years ago.   • The article is currently not in compliance with MOS:LEADFORALIST and therefore fails the WP:DYKCOMPLETE criteria for presentability. The list makes the mistake of providing a mini biography of the subject in the first paragraph of the lead, rather than defining the scope of the list and summarizing what is contained in the list. This is a problem not only because it makes the list unfocused, but also because the vast majority of the text is simply parroting back biographical material found elsewhere rather than providing something new. (A hint, if the lead for a list page looks the same as a biography page then it hasn't been written properly)
The lead needs a complete rewrite. I suggest looking at the lead section of List of awards and nominations received by Adele (an FA List) which jumps right in to defining the list and talking about its scope and dispenses with giving a biographical overview altogether. Another example is List of awards and nominations received by Björk which mixes in some biographical content while still staying focused primarily on awards which is where the focus must be when writing a lead section on a list of awards. Per WP:GUNREL: These articles should generally not be referenced on Wikipedia. I personally would have no issue with you using this source once or twice for something uncontroversial, however unfortunately for an article to appear on the Main Page, I don't think this source is gonna cut it. Article is new enough, long enough, and within policy. However, I don't think this hook works for two reasons. One, the fun of this hook is backwards. The punchline of this hook is when you get to the article and realize it is about a painting and not actual beachfront property. That's witty, but the wit isn't in what one sees on the main page. On its face, the buying of property along a beach isn't interesting, and I don't think the hook will draw in many readers so that they get the wit of the hook which requires actually going to the page. Two, the hook is factually inaccurate. Even if a painting depicts beachside property, the purchaser of a painting knows they aren't buying land, they are buying a painting. I get the humor/wit behind the hook, and if this were an April Fools hook proposal it would be appropriate.   • Hi Paul W, always good to see new civil engineering content and one brought through from WP:AFC. I'll take a look at this one. Article was moved to Mainspace on 27 August and exceeds minimum length; Sourcing looks to be generally OK for the content cited. I sometimes wonder about some articles on Grace's Guide but the one's cited here seem fairly open on where the content comes from (the site was discussed at WP:RSN in 2019 and I am not aware of any more recent discussions). Thanks Paul W. You'll need a US public domain tag for the image if you want to use it on the main page. Additionally I think some of the wording is a bit close to the Tower Bridge source. I can give some examples, if needed, but the Earwig tool summarises it well. Hello again, Dumelow. I worked on reducing the paraphrasing early in the article's development, and have now undertaken another batch of edits, addressing both the Tower Bridge source and the Grace's profile. Not sure how I fix the US image tag issue. An alternative might be to use the portrait of Cruttwell which User:PSCMol added to the site after I did the DYK nomination (but I think the Tower Bridge photo is a stronger hook - or maybe this painting?).     • The Animals section starts with "The zoo is home to as many as 112 species as of 2013" (and in the infobox); is there really no updated figure 10 years later?
    • "The administration of mayor Ed Koch and the New York Zoological Society signed a fifty-year agreement" - did the administration really sign the agreement and not the mayor himself? The NYT source says the mayor signed it.
    • Many animals are not wikilinked on first reference in the Description section, but later are during the Animals section - was there a reason for that?

    Interesting biography about a subject about whom little is known, on fine sources, offline sources accepted AGF. Of the hooks, I like ALT1, because it relates to the image. The image caption can then be shortened, and pictured might come after blindness, because the whole scene is pictured. The image is licensed and illustrates the scene well, but is not ideal in that small size. - I am not sure about Psalms vs. psalms, because afaik it's Psalm 84 when a particular one is meant but otherwise it seems a general term like hymns. I agree that if the image is used, ALT1 makes the most sense; I've changed the caption to simply the English translation of the painting's title and moved "(pictured)" in the hook. I think "Psalm" should be capitalized because it was my understanding that he played the Psalms on the harp, not just Christian hymns, because that was sort of a bardic/skálic tradition to tell stories that way, but it's possible I'm misinterpreting.       • @Soman:, I'm not quite sure if it would be written with the same letters as Arabic or if it would be written in the same style as Cyrillic/Latin-script forms of Avar. I wouldn't have any bias towards changing the spelling of Najmuddin in Arabic-script Avar to the Arabic form.
