[edit]Scientific term, ultimately from Ancient Greek ἰόν n (ión, “going, coming”), a present participle of Ancient Greek εἶμι (eîmi, “to go”) + -он (-on). Cognate with native Bulgarian иде́щ (idéšt, “coming”).
