[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *māṯ(ṯ/-tt-) (“changed, altered”), whence మాఱు (māṟu), మాఱ్పు (māṟpu). Cognate with Kannada ಮಾತು (mātu), Tamil மாட்டு (māṭṭu).
