Etymology

[edit]

Schuessler (2007) minimally reconstructs the Old Chinese as *wînʔ and suggests a derivation from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *lwi(j) (flow; stream), just like (OC lhuiʔ) (minimally reconstructed); early liquids *l- or *r- often disappeared before glides *j- or *w- in Middle Chinese.
